Paul Maruyama Book Signing

  • 11 May 2019
  • 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
  • US Air Force Academy Base Exchange

Come to the US Air Force Academy Base Exchange and have your book ("Escape from Manchuria") signed by the author and our former JASSC president, Paul Maruyama.  If you don't have the book, they will be available for purchase at the book signing.

Much has happened since Paul's book was published in 2010.  As you may know, a two part TV drama (on NHK or Japan Broadcasting Corporation) based on his book aired last year (3/21 and 3/24, 2018) has been highly acclaimed and won a major TV award.  As a result, his father's hometown in Nagano will be building a statue to honor his father.  The statue will be dedicated in 2020.

The most  important reason for writing his book has always been to inform the world about the courageous actions of three unknown Japanese men who brought about the rescue and repatriation of 1.7 million Japanese civilians.  They were stranded in Manchuria at the end of WWII under brutal Soviet occupation.  An equally important purpose for writing his book has always been to inform the world about the benevolence and magnanimity of the U.S. Occupation Forces under the command of General Douglas MacArthur who brought about the return of the utterly helpless Japanese civilians.  These civilians, trapped in Manchuria, were dying at the rate of 2,500 per day due to hunger, cold, and murder by Soviet troops.  It is Paul's firm conviction that the benevolent actions towards these helpless civilians, resulted in the friendship and trust that exist today between Japan and the United States.

Paul's book (which has been translated into Japanese) has gained some notoriety in Japan but, unfortunately, is barely known in the U.S.  So, please come to this book signing and help proliferate this courageous story to the U.S. audience.
